The information provided here will help you come up with appropriate protection against some common illnesses and promote enjoyment of your happy stay in Thailand.
Malaria
Bangkok and most provinces in the central region as well as major tourist resorts such as Chiangmai, Phuket, Hua-Hin and Koh Samui have been free from malaria for decades. Now all cities in Thailand are malaria free. However, tourist destinations in rural neighborhoods, especially those in the mountainous and border areas are still at certain risks. Chloroquine and most other chemo prophylactic drugs have proved to be ineffective against falciparum malaria in Thailand. Tourists visiting these endemic areas are rather recommended to take general precautions against mosquito bite. After sunset, they should stay in screened quarters or mosquito nets, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and may apply mosquito repellents. Those who develop fever within two weeks of entry to risk areas should seek prompt medical examination and treatment.
Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever
These diseases are endemic in Southeast Asia. They are caused by dengue virus from the bite of aedes mosquito that lives in the houses and their neighborhood. This mosquito bites during the day time- Dengue infection in local people, mostly children, often results in fever with bleeding in the skin and other organs (dengue hemorrhagic fever) which is sometime fatal; but for travelers from non-endemic areas, the infection usually manifests as fever with rash in the skin, severe headache and muscle and pains (dengue fever), which is usually non-fatal. Dengue infection is common in the rainy season (approximately May to September in Kerala) when aedes mosquito is abundant. Travelers visiting local households or their vicinity, especially in the rainy season, should be using mosquito repellent even in the day time. Ones who are ill with symptoms suspected of dengue infection should seek medical consultation to establish the cause of the illness.
Typhoid fever
Typhoid fever has become uncommon among Thai people. However, travelers should not neglect taking prevention against this food and water borne disease. Precaution measures for diarrhea, as mentioned later, are effective for typhoid as well. It is also recommended that the travelers receive typhoid vaccination, in injectable or oral form, before start of the journey. However, those who need initiation or booster vaccination can find the service at most hospitals and clinics in Thailand, Diarrhea is mostly caused by ingestion of food and drinks contaminated with bacteria or viruses. To prevent diarrhea, avoid uncooked food and drink only boiled or bottled or carbonated water. Food served at street vendors should be considered at risk. Fresh vegetables and fruits should be adequately washed with clean water. Fresh salad should be taken only from a salad bar or a restaurant of hygienic standard. Tap water in many Southeast Asian cities is claimed to be safe for drinking, but it is still advisable to stick to safety precautions. Danger from diarrhea primarily is the result of the loss of water and electrolytes from the body. If you happen to have diarrhea during your travel, the most helpful remedy is drinking electrolyte solution to replace the loss. Therefore, it is always useful to keep some electrolyte solution packets in your first-aid kit. If your diarrhea gets worse or does not improve within 12-24 hours, consult the physicians for proper investigation and treatment.
Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS
Urethritis remains the most common treatable sexually transmitted disease (STD) among tourists to Asia. Gonorrhea from Southeast Asia is frequently multi-drug resistant. While syphilis become less common, HIV/AIDS is spreading at worrisome speeds in most Asian countries, resulting mostly from unprotected sexual contacts.
Sites Of Interest
Phentermine diet pills : Phentermine is the most prescribed weight loss medication and has been helping people to lose weight for over 50 years. Phentermine is availablein its generic form and is also sold under a number of brand names including Adipex, Ionamin and Zantryl.

BACK WATERS OF ALAPPUZHA
Usually a 64 km drive from Cochin to Alappuzha in early January will be a exhausting experience. But scenic beauty of Kerala all along NH 47 highway is a mesmerizing .The drizzle that is a part of normal Kerala weather almost through out the year makes the journey even more charming . Alappuzha has a unique history as a port since16th century. Dalwa Raja Kesavadas said to have made significant contributions towards the development of this town .The Britsh nick named the place “Venice of the East “. It was during this period the town became center of tourist attraction .”Alappuzha” the term means”Land between sea and rivers joining the sea”.

Backwaters have always been a tourist attraction in Alappuzha .A one week stay in house boats may cost you dearly but once you are into it you appreciate the cost. Cool nights in the house boats is ideal for romance ,chat and enjoyment. Couples can have very pleasant and private time here. Looking into the darkness lighted by blue moonlit is a refreshing experience. A few may get some new insights about themselves but mostly everyone will have some thing to talk in this atmosphere. A cool breeze pampers you as the boat men take you for a tour of the lake. We can see houses on small islands and natives rowing small boats during day time.

Prime Minister Nehru came to see a snake boat race in Alapauzha and was so impressed that he sent Trophy for the race and since then this race is a major tourist attraction every year. Snake boats called Chundanvallams by natives are very prestigious possessions in here. People group under the banner of there own locality names, make teams and row these huge boats in during the race. The competition is so intense that this leads to many heart breaks after the event.

Back waters are the major asset God has given to this part the world .Besides tourism the natives have coconut and paddy cultivations as a major source of revenue.

Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal project.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Friday lashed out Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu for criticising the state government for not completing land acquisition work of rail-road connectivity of Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal project.

Baalu had recently shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh referrring to the state government’s “lack of seriousness” in completing land acquisition procedures for the project, for which the Centre has committed about Rs 1200 crore. When the Chief Minister’s attention was drawn to Baalu’s comments by reporters, he said “Baalu is not a UPA minister but a minister who is always protecting the interests of Tamil Nadu and stood against Kerala’s interests.”

Dismissing the Shipping Minister’s observations, Achuthanandan said the state was committed to the project and land acquisition proceedings were going on.

The deadline for completing land acquisition proceedings had been extended several times by the state. The Shipping Secretary had held a review meeting on April 28 this year in which the government had promised to complete land acquisition procedures by May 30.

Baalu had also twice met the Chief Minister and requested him to expedite the proceedings for early completion of the project, the foundation stone for which was laid by the Prime Minister on February 16, 2005.

Cochin Port to invite fresh bids for capital dredging.
BL reported that Cochin Port Trust is likely to invite fresh tenders for capital dredging together with maintenance dredging at Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal at Kochi in Ernakulam district of Kerala.

The total dredging cost is estimated to be INR 485 crore and the dredging companies have to submit the tenders within one month. The dredging to be carried out is to the extent of approximately 24 million cubic meter and maintenance dredging of 16 million cubic meters in the next 2 years.

It may be noted that CPT was forced to cancel the tenders which were floated earlier in November 2007, as the price quoted by the international company was 70% higher than the estimated cost. Besides, the port did not get sufficient response for the tender as there was only one firm, which placed its bids for the work.
